Enjoy the Jerk Shack

We entered the clean, bright space through big open doors and immediately noticed colorful, art-filled walls.  We ordered at the counter before selecting one of the small tables positioned so we could easily observe the neighborly courtyard interactions.  Young children gleefully circled the paved central space on tiny balance bikes and scooters, while parents sat nearby, supervising and chatting.  Leashed dogs wagged their way across the yard to the nearby  All the Best pet supply shop.  The huge wall mural gives the area added visual interest.

The food arrived at our table in “to go” packaging.  I don’t know if we weren’t clear whether we were eating-in, or if that’s how all the food comes.  I had the Cuban Spiced Salmon ($22).  It came with red beans and rice, cooked Caribbean style with coconut milk, and plantains and coleslaw.  The salmon was perfectly cooked, moist and flakey. At roughly the size of my hand the piece of fish was plenty big for me!  If I hadn’t been so hungry I could easily have split it with a companion.  The spices were flavorful, not hot.  The coleslaw was perfect, crunchy, fresh and not swimming in mayo.

My husband had Jerk Pork ($20) with the same sides.  We shared a side of greens ($6).  We also each had one of the Speciality drinks ($5) which change occasionally.  We had Thai basil, lime juice and coconut.  We loved it, but we would have liked it even more if it had been colder on the wicked hot day we were there.

Offerings include vegetarian Jerk Mushroom Plate ($18), Jerk Mushroom Burrito ($15) Jerk Mac n Cheese ($7), and Tostones ($7).  You can find the full menu online.  I didn’t see a lot of gluten free options but red beans and rice with greens might work.

This is a locally owned establishment.  Trey Lamont grew up in the neighborhood and continues to live here with his wife and 4 children.   He and his wife gained much of their experience operating a similar restaurant closer to downtown, and they also owned and operated a food truck.  They have been in this space for 2 years.Jerk Shack (in the courtyard at Mid-Town Commons)
