Our neighbor Mandy Lozano, led the meeting and was elected to the SPCC board. New messages regarding events that were announced will be posted soon. More on the Noon to 2:00 PM, FOOD, FUN & LIVE MUSIC by contemporary jazz guitarist Michael Powers will post later.
We thank candidates Toshiko Hasegawa and Rebecca Saldaña for participating in the forum, answering our questions, including those from the audience. With the forum and audience engagement with Casa Latina Executive Director Jennyfer Mesa and Seattle City Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth the agenda was packed.
All King County District 2 candidates had been invited. All acknowledged the date and time and indicated plans to attend. Later, Miriam Mboya let us know that another event had prevented her from attending.
Executive Director Mesa encouraged all to contact Casa Latina for day workers, let us know the services provided by the day workers, and engaged with the audience. Please check them out. SPCC very much appreciates Casa Latina.
Less than 30 minutes will never be enough time for a conversation with Councilmember Hollingsworth. Mainly she had time to address her amendments to the Family, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy Implementation regarding food security and universal free lunch to Seattle Schools students. For details see the City Council Blog. The audience was also interested in housing and shelter for all, along with safety. Further action on the comprehensive plan for Seattle has been delayed until 2027. We will be following up with her regarding design review.
SEIU 1099NW, the union for many of the health care workers at Providence/Swedish hospitals requested time to bring attention to the big changes coming to the level of care and type of care that is offered at the so-called Cherry Hill hospital as more services are transferred to the First Hill location with new buildings. (Some SPCC members will remember that when the current Master Plan for the Cherry Hill campus was appealed by SPCC and others to the Hearing Examiner, SEIU hired a lawyer and paid for experts to present their case and that effort was very helpful to the appeal of SPCC and other neighbors.)
Stay engaged!!
